The Plains warbonnet is not a Cherokee thing. It is not a Navajo thing. It is not an Indian thing. It is a Plains thing.

Stop calling every silly thing you draw that even vaguely resembles a native “Cherokee” or “Navajo” or “Aztec.”

Stop drawing the warbonnet everywhere as the apparently definitive native thing. It isn’t part of all of our 600+ cultures.

Same goes for the tipi, not part of every one of the 600+ indigenous cultures.

Stop thinking that if a native person doesn’t have dark, “mahogany” skin, that their heritage is invalid. Even without admixture, we actually do have varying skin tones.

Stop wearing crappy fake warbonnets.

Stop wearing redface.

Stop using us as your silly mascots. We are people.

Stop saying “spirit animal.” It’s derived from a New Age bastardization of a something that actually exists in some of our cultures.

Don’t smudge. Cleanse all you like, that’s fine, but don’t smudge.

Don’t call us “Indians.” “Native American” isn’t great either, it is not our name, but it’s slightly better than “Indian.” “Indigenous” is also fine.

Don’t use NDN/ndn. That is ours.

Step off about our hair. If you meet a long-haired native, admire it if you like, maybe even ask them about it (RESPECTFULLY), but do not touch. The same applies for someone with short hair, but additionally for those with short hair, don’t say things like “oh you’d look more native/Indian/etc if your hair was long.” We didn’t all traditionally have long, flowing hair. Believe it or not, there are actually different haircuts existing in our various cultures, and aside from that ultimately it’s a personal choice, one does not need to have long hair if they don’t want to. Doesn’t make them any less native to have short hair.

Don’t pray to our spirits/gods/energies. Native spiritualities are closed, they are not for outsiders.

Don’t say “The Native Americans believed…” Firstly, the past tense is silly, we still exist and do things. Secondly, we are NOT A MONOLITH. As I mentioned before, there are upwards of 600 different Native American cultures.

Don’t ask about someone’s “Indian name.” That’s not only insensitive, the name you are referring to in that instance is something sacred, and might not be something that person wants to share with you.

Don’t call yourself silly crap like “howling wolf” or “flying eagle.” That’s also racist and insensitive.

Regardless of whatever you might think you’re doing, or what your intentions may be, if a native person tells you that what you’re doing is disrespectful, STOP DOING IT.

You aren’t honoring us. You’re just mocking us further, demonstrating your continued ability to treat us like shit and get away with it even now, centuries after our colonization began. Your feelings are not more important than our history and survival.

To those doing your best as allies, thank you, keep doing what you do. HOWEVER, don’t let opportunities to educate others escape you. By letting them continue to be ignorant, you are failing. Spread the message.

There will be no “please.” It’s been more than 500 years, and we still are made to be invisible in our homelands. Still we are treated like less. Some even think we all died long ago.

Appropriation of Native cultures runs rampant in the pagan/witchcraft community. Remember, it’s just like kindergarten. Be kind, be respectful, and ask before touching something that does not belong to you.

As a white person, a white AUTISTIC person, I am horrified that some of these things even have to be stated. The hair thing. WHY WOULD YOU TOUCH SOMEONE’S HAIR, that is their body, that requires consent. Why would you tell someone to be more ‘native’ in their physical presentation for you, that is just as bad as telling women to smile for you, worse even. White people, why are you like this.

And yeah, stop it with the appropriating culture thing. I grew up in a country (NOT AMERICA) where you made ‘dreamcatchers’ in Brownies and played ‘cowboys and indians’ in the playground and New Age shops were AWASH with things stolen from indigenous cultures (STILL ARE). Indigenous names were a joke with a punchline. My (white) cousin named two of her (white) kids Navajo and Cheyenne. It all sucks. It all happened. But we have an opportunity to be better. We have a choice to listen to native peoples and NOT DO THAT SHIT. Same goes for Indigenous Australians and their cultures, and all of the other cultures and peoples impacted by white imperialism and colonialism. Just because your ancestors stole it doesn’t make it yours to use now. It’s almost twenty fricking eighteen. If you ask, and if you’re told no, don’t touch. Any kindergartener knows that.

I’m not going to comment on any of the “women in the alt right” posts flying around today because my perspective is so skewed from following the far right. By necessity I’ve gotten to the point I don’t react to them viscerally anymore like normal people do.

But from my perspective, the increased visibility of the issue is good for us (people who hate Nazis). The debate over women in the alt right is creating more dissent within their movement. There are increasing divisions between three sides when it comes to their position on women:

(don’t get me wrong, they’re all misogynists and wifebeaters, they just disagree on how to go about it)

1) Old-school white supremacists who are misogynist in the traditional way. They mainly hate women but sometimes get worked up about “Valkyrie shield maidens protecting the white race” and say nice things about them. They’re really into pro-natalism and “having lots of white babies”.

2) The “alt-lite” who’ve retreated from the naked anti-semitism of the core alt right since 2016. They also hate women, especially feminists, but are perfectly happy to have self-hating women on their side. Ann Coulter is an older example. Lauren Southern is a newer one. They’re not particularly pro-natalism, but they sometimes give it lip service.

3) The core alt right who hate women to a degree you can’t even imagine if you’re a normal person. Strongly influenced by linked hate movements like MRA and MGTOW, they even hate the whacko white Nazi women who agree with them. Any woman speaking up publicly is supposed to get bullied off the internet immediately. Tara McCarthy didn’t really understand that—maybe she thought they were kidding—but they weren’t, so now she’s paying the price and they’ve turned on her. 

A lot of people are pointing out that the core alt right hate women to such a degree that their movement isn’t going to last very long, because any group in the history of the world needs women and kids to last beyond one generation. The core alt right answer with a magical thinking argument called “white Sharia”, essentially arguing that once they win, they’ll enslave all women and keep them in cages anyway. I’m not being hyperbolic. They actually say this.

Every time I say misogyny in this post I’m including transmisogyny, when I say women I also mean trans women, whenever I say “the female body” I also mean trans women’s female bodies. And I’m not doing that to look cool because I don’t give a shit about looking cool, it’s just the objectively right thing to do. If you’re a young TERF who got sucked into it out of a contrarian impulse, you’ve been conned. You’re getting into a deadend ideology based on hate with frightening parallels to the alt right. The alt right agrees with you all about trans women, they even draw points for their arguments from your lying campaigns about trans women. You are effectively their allies. I am both surprised that this is a thing, and, totally not surprised *facepalm*

I am queer, autistic and female and I TOTALLY benefit from white privilege. What I can do about it is USE this privilege to make noise and make room for people who are NOT white in any way I can. To listen to voices different to mine about what is needed, rather than thinking I know. To admit when I fuck up, because I have fucked up, and I KNOW I will again, not because I don’t care, but because my whiteness permeates every aspect of my experience. Being white doesn’t mean I’m not discriminated against for other reasons, but NONE of those reasons mean I know what it’s like to be anything other than white. I can listen, I can educate myself, I can try to empathise and open my narrow world view to try and imagine what it would be like for someone who is not white, but none of this means I KNOW. That only comes with living in a white supremacist society as a person of colour, and I can never be or experience that.

I want to not be racist. I try my best to not be racist. But that said, I have grown up white in a white dominated, colonial nation where white supremacy is in every schoolbook, every tv show and every ‘traditional’ song. I know that I will screw up sometimes, but know that I’d rather know where I screwed up so that I can change.

Autism Speaks is accepting support from Soldiers of Odin, a white supremacist vigilante group, and happily featuring their group portrait on their website asking for $ to fund their shitty autistic-abusing organisation. As A$ are flat-out eugenicists and the organisation’s leadership is in bed with Trump, I for one am very unfucking surprised that they’re chill with their money-making events being full of actual Nazis. So much for their new ‘progressive’ mission statement. Do not trust or support A$.

They were MAD, CONFUSED AND PRESSED that Marlon Brando would betray White Supremacy in this way.

To this very day, they are TWISTED over this.

And when Littlefeather got up there and READ THEM FOR FILTH, they GAGGED. For eons.

So I imagine there are people like me out there who’ve never even heard of Marlon Brando and are extremely confused over why this is important.

Marlon Brando was the Don in The Godfather, and in 1973, he was nominated for and won an Academy Award for it. However, he was also a huge Natives rights activist, and boycotted the ceremony because he felt that Hollywood’s depictions of Native Americans in the media led to the Wounded Knee Incident (which I was always taught as “the second massacre at Wounded Knee” but apparently that’s not the real name). He sent Sacheen Littlefeather, an Apache Native rights activist, in his stead. Wikipedia’s article on her explains the rest:

Brando had written a 15-page speech for Littlefeather to give at the ceremony, but when the producer met her backstage he threatened to physically remove her or have her arrested if she spoke on stage for more than 60 seconds.[5] Her on-stage comments were therefore improvised. She then went backstage and read the entire speech to the press. In his autobiography My Word is My Bond, Roger Moore (who presented the award) claims he took the Oscar home with him and kept it in his possession until it was collected by an armed guard sent by the Academy.
