But seriously though, this is always something I’ve thought about a lot in relation to Steve. Because Steve is super-committed when it comes to almost EVERYTHING. Justice, freedom, equality, civil rights, doing the Right Thing, trying to be the best person he can be, trying to see the good in all people, to being Captain America, and an Avenger, and leading by example. Steve generally doesn’t do anything by half-measures. When he’s in, he’s ALL IN.
Except when it comes to romantic relationships, which he has an oddly casual go-with-the-flow approach to. Which has always struck me as odd considering the rest of Steve’s personality. But he keeps having all these on-and-off relationships where he’s together with whoever for a couple weeks/months and then for whatever reason they amicably part ways, and he’s not overly bothered by it other than perhaps a bit of melancholy. He’s got a very ‘oh well, maybe next time will work?’ attitude and doesn’t fight tooth and nail to try to keep relationships together like he does with, well, everything else in his life.
Instead Steve is like ‘ok, if we’re not working, we’re not working. It was nice being together. Good luck on whatever you choose to do after this, I wish you all the best.’ (Which, don’t get me wrong, it is great that Steve can be on good terms with basically every ex he’s ever had). And that his rationale for dating some of the people he’s date who haven’t been long-term love interests, (like Sharon or Bernie,) seems to boil down to ‘they seem like a nice person, maybe I will give this a go again’. Which is a pretty wishy-washy reason for dating someone, IMO. ‘You are a non-objectionable, caring person, (who is hopefully not a super-villain,) ok, we can give this a go’. Really?
Like where is the spark and the passion? (I will give Bernie credit here, because I could really feel the love when they were together, but even other long-term love interests like Sharon and Rachel seem like just something that is convenient for both them and Steve at the time, as opposed to something that either of them are really committed to actually making last).
And from all of this I’ve always kind of gotten the feeling that Steve dates most of the people he dates based on what he THINKS he should want as opposed to what he ACTUALLY wants. So he has this ideal image of the kind of person he should fall in love with…which is not necessarily the type of person that work well as his partner long-term. And that, because he can’t have that white-picket-fence dream that he has the image of in his mind, he isn’t going to have anything/get to be happy at all? Without really considering that he could have something different, and it may be just as good or better. Its one of the times where I see Steve’s tendency to get really set in his ways is just sabotaging himself.
Then combine this with the fact that Steve has this kind of casual disdain/self-hate for himself back when he was tiny and weak and sick, (any arc where Steve is de-serumed or something similar make this REALLY obvious,) and this goes into some really interesting territory. Because on one hand, Steve really wants, desperately, for people to see him as Steve, as just another guy, not Captain America: larger than life patriotic symbol and hero. But he also kind of dislikes who he was before the serum when he didn’t have the physical strength to fight for everything he believed like he does now, along with the isolation, the bullying, having doors slammed in his face, stuck with dreaming because he couldn’t be DOING. And so I think he actually kind of dismisses a lot of the ‘tiny Steve’ thoughts, (which to me ARE the wistful dreams, the doubts, the insecurities, and all the creativity,) in favour of the ‘big Steve’ thoughts, (which covers all his morals, beliefs, and convictions. the ‘big picture thoughts’ that are bigger than one man and have to be stood up for,) in his head. Because the ‘big Steve’ thoughts are so much more important, and the ‘tiny Steve’ thoughts…well, he was kind of pathetic back then. (The storyline in Avenging Spider-Man #5 is like the PERFECT example of this to me). which leads to this disconnect between who Steve sees himself as and what he’s actually FEELING. Because ‘big Steve’s views/desires and ‘tiny Steve’s views/desires do not overlap all the time.
So, I can’t help but think that it’s ‘big Steve’ that’s the half that makes all the relationship decisions, and then wonders when he just keeps drifting away from partners and nothing really lasts. Because I think ‘tiny Steve,’ not ‘big Steve,’ is actually the part of him that knows what would REALLY make him happy. But he hasn’t really been listening to ‘tiny Steve’ for a long time, in any situation where ‘big Steve’ and ‘tiny Steve’ actually disagree. So he just ends up feeling confused and not being able to figure out what it is that he’s really searching for.
And, well, it’s kind of hard to figure out what will make someone else really happy when you can’t figure out what makes YOU really happy.
I also think this is a not-small factor in Steve’s often STAGGERING tendency to be completely oblivious to the emotions/distress/love/stress that the people around him are going through until things just blow up.
Oh, god, thank you for this post. I have the similar thought, but I also draw the line bitween Steve Rogers and Captain America. Captain doesn’t act as he wants, he is acting as it should be, as others expect.
Like with Falcon:
He is passive in relationships with women – Bernie and Sharon have always made the first move. Hana didn’t -> nothing happened.
The only time (or one of the few), when Steve first kissed Sharon and decided to try them again, suprise Sharon a lot.

Sharon blatantly points out that she had to ask him otherwise Steve probably never would.
And this, this is what bothered me the most: not the fact that he’s thinking of saying “yes” to Sharon, but his whole attitude about marriage. It really is strange that someone, like Steve, who is usually so proactive and committed isn’t that way when it comes to relationships. If anything, those values are made most evident in relationships. Personally, I don’t think much good can come from a marriage that he thinks “might not be so bad,” but I guess we’ll see.

this is a huge fucking gun, okay, it’s built for serious use and re-use and is designed for high-volume usage, it’s not only exceptionally accurate it’s also BUILT FOR USE AS A HOME PROTECTIVE WEAPON, it’s got several features that allow for quick release of the safety (aka “cocked-and-locked” aka she can lock it down WITH A ROUND CHAMBERED for safety AND incredibly quick response times)

Sharon Carter is her second, and they both bitch out the Avengers on a regular basis. Coulson can continue shepherding his bus of broken toys around, except with Maria needs May’s support. Victoria Hand is, of course, shacked up somewhere with Sitwell. Not sleeping together, mind out of the gutter. But they were both behind on “Game of Thrones,” and with both of them being fake dead, it seemed like a good chance to get caught up.
Where Pepper Potts smashed through the wall and rushed Maya Hanson to the ER and now Maya heads R&D and Pepper runs the company and Tony just plays with his bots and is perfectly happy inventing completely unmarketable stuff.
Where Natasha is the poised, controlled public face of the Avengers because she can actually handle it without showing up drunk or having a panic attack or telling a reporter to do something anatomically impossible.
Where Betty has turned down job offers from StarkIndustries and SHIELD but takes a post with Empire University, just close enough and just far enough away. She teaches and does the research she wants to do and in her spare time, she founded a group of scientists that serve as public interest watchdogs and whistle blowers. They focus attention on military, government and industry work, demanding transparency and high safety standards. She meets Bruce in the park, once a week, early in the day or late in the afternoon, when there’s fewer people and less chance of something happening. She holds his hand the entire time, and sometimes that’s all they do. Walk and hold hands.
Where Gwen Stacey goes to London and still writes to Peter, emails and real letters, because she will always be his friend and his lodestone, even if they’re not together any more. Because part of being an adult is realizing that you can love someone, and have that not be enough. Sometimes. Loving someone. Means letting them go. And wishing with all your heart for them to be happy and safe. And Peter loves her, and is so happy for her, because he is growing up, and becoming the hero he’s always tried so hard to be. And Gwen sets him up with this girl she knows back in New York, maybe he’ll like Mary Jane, and maybe Mary Jane would like him…
Where Peggy Carter builds up SHIELD with dozens of the female intelligence workers and codebreakers and technicians and secretaries, stolen from the US Military and Betchley Park and Hedy Lamarr is the ultimate spy and the one who explained to Howard Stark just what would happen to his balls if he didn’t learn to keep his hands to himself. It involves liquid nitrogen and he learned to keep his hands to himself.
Where the contributions of the women of this verse don’t begin with being a love interest and end with their death.
Where they create a vibrant, brilliant, balanced world, not in spite of the male characters, but with them. Because it’s a better world with them in it.

Is it a better world with them in it, though? The male Asgardians, Sitwell, Coulson, Banner, and Stark all seem to be pretty useless in this scenario. You could ace all of them and nothing in this world would suffer for it. The only one who retains any kind of relevance is Peter.
In all seriousness. Did you just try to hijack a post about how we need more female representation to say that having the women there renders the men, what, unimportant? That having your favorite charcters only be mentioned or important when it relates to the actions or emotional well being of a character of the opposite gender isn’t what you want to see? That it would be sad that focusing entirely on one group of people rendered the other half of them completely irrelevent?
I didn’t say what Thor, Loki or the Warriors Three were doing. I didn’t say what Bruce was doing. I only mentioned them in relation to how they impact the women’s lives and this is exactly how media treats women. I said that Tony was HAPPY with his ability to do exactly what he wants and avoid the things he’s spent three movies avoiding. Despite this, you’ve jumped to the conclusion that they’re irrelevent just because the above answer doesn’t focus on them. The narrative doesn’t say they’re irrelevent. It just implies they’re uninteresting. Not worthy of our focus. “It’s fine, they can be the romantic interests and the perky sidekicks!”
Welcome to the background radiation of my life. Erasure sucks, doesn’t it? Only difference is, I’m decring the ACTUAL FRIDGING and ERASURE of female characters. You’re displeased with the fantasy of something that comes close to equality.
Hey, can you explain what Remender did that was so terrible? Because I see a lot of posts talking about how he did something horrible, but I can’t find what it actually is. Thanks!
1. He killed Rogue and Scarlet Witch on his way out the door on Uncanny Avengers. (Two female characters who feature heavily in just released/upcoming movies)
2. He fridged Sharon Carter for Steve Rogers’ manpain. (ANOTHER female character who features in a current movie, wow what are the CHANCES he’d find another one to kill?)
3. He just wrote a story that features a sex scene that a lot of people (especially females and POC, two groups that often feel that their concerns are not taken seriously by comics culture) are finding to be very problematic. It involves alcohol, Sam Wilson (ANOTHER character that was just introduced in a major movie, WOW!) and a female character who may or may not be of age. Although the narrative has established her to be an adult, the fact that Remender felt the need to clearly state her age in the middle of the sequence means that he was aware that most people did not take her to be an adult. To put it another way, when Natasha Romanov has a morning after, it does not involve her saying, “I’m thirty-six.” She doesn’t need to. Everyone KNOWS she is an adult. The fact that the character’s age must be stated indicates that the writer and the editorial staff KNEW it would be an issue, and they moved forward with it anyway.
4. He wrote a speech where a (white, cis, het male who could pass for a non-mutant) character states that he does not approve of the “M-word,” or Mutant, that he considers it divisive. IT IS BAD TO HAVE SUCH LABELS WE SHOULD DO AWAY WITH THEM. This kind of speech, written and spoken from a position of privilege, does not feel like inclusion. It feels like erasure. Having a pretty blonde white boy dismissing the very real problems of people who CANNOT hide their minority identity, dismissing the way they define themselves, because he doesn’t like that word, but doesn’t offer an alternative, smacks of the worst kind of white male privilege, and it sticks in the craw.
4. I do not appreciate his writing aesthetic. I do not appreciate how he treats female characters. I do not approve of the choices he makes. I do not appreciate how he handles his interviews or how he treats fandom. I do not appreciate the fact that every time I get an ask saying, “I’m new to comics, but I love the movies, can you recommend a comic?” I cannot, in good conscience recommend Captain America. I will not, especially to a new, female reader who loves the Cap she’s seen on the screen. Because Remender does not write that Cap.
5. He is a hack. I’ve seen more compelling plots and character development from the average AO3 fic.
I don’t like him. I’d be happy to see him driven from comics. I’d be happy to have Cap in better hands. I will not buy anything else with his name on it. I have let Marvel know as much, and I continue to support comics with creators who, in my opinion, treat their characters and their fanbase with more respect.
Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we’ll avenge it.
