thank you, Agent Carter, for being the hero we need and the hero we deserve.

I really give a lot of kudos to the men who are strong enough and fair-minded enough to realize they were wrong, and to admit to it after realizing it and changing their thinking. This is great. And it gives me hope that we can turn the tide against sexism.

I certainly don’t think former assholes deserve a parade just for having an epiphany, but this comment is a good example of the right way to acknowledge that you’ve been doing it wrong and want to change.

HEY SO LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THIS IS MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT ADDITION TO ANY POST ON TUMBLR AND I’M INCLUDING THE PERSON WHO DEFENDED THE EYEBROWS-ON-MONA-LISA PERSON BY TALKING ABOUT PARENTS MEETING IN CLOWN CARS IN THIS ESTIMATION.

Because this is it. This is the meta-statement we’ve been waiting for. This is the explicit textual acknowledgment, within the Marvel universe, that some of the earlier beloved stories about favorite characters got things wrong. They misrepresented things. They played up the accomplishments of (say) the dashing straight white man, while minimizing the role of others.

This is the closest we’re probably ever going to get within the universe, rather than within the metatext, to the idea that women as “Mary Sues” is bullshit, and the real truth is that women were amazing all along and the text was biased towards a straight white male perspective.

This is the permission (not that we ever needed it, but good to be granted anyway) that we can look at early comics and movies and say “Oh, I see, this is the part where Pepper or Peggy or Betty or Jane or whoever saved the day but the story had to pretend it was the guy.” By making this explicit within the MCU, they are (perhaps inadvertently, IDK) giving the same permission to us in the real world.

I’m not saying this is actually what was intended, but I would argue this is a valid reading supported by the text.

This reading works really well on the Fantastic Four. The earliest stories tended to concentrate more on the three men, but Sue eventually got “powered up” so she was on par with them. This can easily be interpreted as the stories slowly having to catch up with what was actually happening.

Some poor comics editor in this ‘verse had to be like “Sir, we have a problem. People are finding these comics unbelievable.” “Is it the man on fire or the man made of rock?” “No, those are fine, obviously. It’s just- seeing how competent the Invisible Woman is on the streets of their hometowns is making them question the Invisible Girl in our stories.”

Agent Carter needs to be a success. It needs to be a success because sexism is still very much a thing, in Hollywood as in most other large societal institutions. There is an ironic meta-level to this series and to Peggy Carter as a character, wherein she must battle the sexism of her time in order to do the work she feels called to and which is exclusively male-dominated. Concurrently, her series must fight that same uphill battle of entrenched sexism 70 years in the future, in present-day 2015, as it attempts to make a dent in an entertainment genre still depressingly, excessively inhabited almost solely by white men.

Male superhero yarns can be brilliant, and they can be mediocre and they can be downright abominable, and Hollywood will continue to churn them out prolifically like clockwork. If Agent Carter is nor a roaring success, all hopes for a Black Widow movie go rushing down the drain, along with any other female-led superhero movie or TV franchise still in early stages of development. Agent Carter is a test balloon, and all of Hollywood is using this one 8-episode series to pose the question “Can female superheroes be successful? Can they be profitable? Can they be popular?”

You are 12. You’re at the library looking for some generic young adult fiction novel about a girl who falls for her best friend. Your dad makes a disgusted face. “This is about lesbians,” he says. The word falls out of his mouth as though it pains him. You check out a different book and cry when you get home, but you aren’t sure why. You learn that this is not a story about you, and if it is, you are disgusting.

You are 15. Your relatives are fawning over your cousin’s new boyfriend. “When will you have a boyfriend?” they ask. You shrug. “Maybe she’s one of those lesbians,” your grandpa says. You don’t say anything. You learn that to find love and acceptance from your family, you need a boyfriend who thinks you are worthy of love and acceptance.

You are 18. Your first boyfriend demands to know why you never want to have sex with him. He tells you that sex is normal and healthy. You learn that something is wrong with you.

You are 13. You’re at a pool party with a relative’s friend’s daughter. “There’s this lesbian in my gym class. It’s so gross,” she says. “Ugh, that’s disgusting,” another girl adds. They ask you, “do you have any lesbians at your school?” You tell them no and they say you are lucky. You learn to stay away from people.

You are 20. You have coffee with a girl and you can’t stop thinking about her for days afterwards. You learn the difference between a new friendship and new feelings for a person.

You are 13. Your mom is watching a movie. You see two girls kiss on screen. You feel butterflies and this sense that you identify with the girls on the screen. Your mom gets up and covers the screen. You learn that if you are like those girls, no one wants to see it.

You are 20. You and your friends are drunk and your ex-boyfriend dares you to make out with your friend. You both agree. You touch her face. It feels soft and warm. Her lips are small and her hands feel soft on your back. You learn the difference between being attracted to someone and recognizing that someone you care about is attractive.

You are 16. You find lesbian porn online. Their eyes look dead and their bodies are positioned in a way that you had never imagined. You learn that liking girls is acceptable if straight men can decide the terms.

You are 20. You are lying next to a beautiful girl and talking about everything. You tell her things that you don’t usually tell anyone. You learn how it feels not to want to go to sleep because you don’t want to miss out on any time with someone.

You are 15. Your parents are talking about a celebrity. Your dad has a grin on his face and says, “her girlfriend says that she’s having the best sex of her life with her!” You learn that being a lesbian is about the kind of sex you have and not how you love.

You are 18. You are in intro to women’s and gender studies. “Not all feminists are lesbians- I love my husband! Most of the feminists on our leadership team are straight! It’s just a stereotype,” the professor exclaims. You learn that lesbianism is something to separate yourself from.

You are 21 and you are kissing a beautiful girl and she’s your girlfriend and you understand why people write songs and make movies and stupid facebook statuses about this and time around you just seems to stop and you could spend forever like this and you learn that there is nothing wrong with you and you are falling in love.

You are 21. And you are okay.

One thing I was thinking about today was Alexander Pierce. I feel like one thing that’s been under-discussed in Cap 2 meta (at least, from what I’ve seen on my dash— maybe it’s been talked about elsewhere!) is the privilege of Alexander Pierce, a privilege that is very deliberately communicated onscreen.

Pierce, as a character, is visually distinctive: he’s not just an older white man, but a very specific genre of older white man. His three-piece suits and tortoiseshell glasses suggest a fondness for the styles, at least, of some happier past: the gentlemen’s era (to me located sort of vaguely pre-Philby) when men like him knew how to be graceful with power, because it was something that came naturally to them, something they would never have to demand. His charm, his generally pleasant demeanor are of a piece with this— after all, as he himself tells Steve, he’s the diplomat: the one who keeps his hands clean while Nick Fury does what needs to be done.
