Here’s my entry I drew for the Steve/Bucky Brooklyn zine, which I am now allowed to share as all the copies have been shipped (:

I really love the idea of the Winter Soldier hallucinating a pre-serum Steve, because whatever Steve says is a projection of what Bucky Barnes really wants the Winter Soldier to hear.

I had a brief affair with the idea of the Winter Soldier hallucinating a younger Steve after the events of the film. This ghost of a memory would serve as his slowly recovering sense of right and wrong, telling him not to kill for vengeance and telling him to defend those who are downtrodden.

He doesn’t fully recognize the boy — he certainly doesn’t yet equate him with Captain America — but some part of him desperately wishes to listen to his words.

Regardless of these feelings, the Winter Soldier continues to ignore him. He still has a mission to do: eliminate Hydra.

Twelve year old Bucky Barnes wakes up in the middle of a battlefield, missing an arm and surrounded by strange buildings and stranger people. Naturally, he freaks out.

Hydra Steve!Clone and the Winter Soldier in the battle field.

Headofporridge suggested the clone cannot speak because Hydra surgically removed his vocal cords after the Winter Soldier “malfunctioned” and fatally wounded a lot of their staff due to the sound of the clone’s voice. Either way, he probably uses a combination of ASL and military signing on the field because it is imperative they both remain unseen and unheard.

I like the idea of Clone!Steve being the sniper and the Winter Soldier the brutal force, because eeee role reversals. Also, the Winter Soldier seems less built for stealth and more for absolute carnage, with the guns and machinery he’s packing. It stands to reason the weaker and smaller (for now) Clone!Steve would be his backup from afar, fatally silencing anyone who sees the Winter Soldier.
