I saw the tweets about this today, and I was like oh yeah, I remember hearing about that.
And then I saw the pictures and justâ wow. What it would have meant to have these women in the movie, all this time. I canât properly articulate it but itâs hitting me unexpectedly hard.
Wow thats a shame, even a nice old lady too. These Space Valkyries should have been left in.
I lived, ate, and breathed Star Wars from age 2 until 2005 when RotS finally beat the enthusiasm out of me, and I have NEVER, EVER in all my reading on behind-the-scenes and makings-of heard of these shots. Itâs a shame there was no relaunched edit of the original trilogy they could have slipped these in OH FUCKING WAIT THEREâS BEEN LIKE 3 OF THOSE NOW.

I want to see the old lady in the A-Wing. Seriously, itâs like, sheâs somebodyâs grandma. Some kid in the Outer Rim Territories got greased by the Empire for seeing something she wasnât supposed to see, and her grandma, the bush pilot, decided âFuck this, Iâm gonna strap on an fighter and make the Empire fucking PAY for the moment it decided to fuck with MY FAMILY.â

Whenever there is a war, there are women who are warriors. Then they get erased from history. Happens in real wars and fictional ones alike.
Less than 5% of general aviation licenses go to women. Â If these had been left in, you can bet that number would be higher.

That old lady has been fighting the Empire since its inception. She knows, more than the younger pilots around her, what they lost, what they had before, the swift and increasing evil of the galactic takeover.
What it was going to be, we were trying to complicate the relationship between Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D agent friends. If Hawkeye got a call from S.H.I.E.L.D saying Captain America is a fugitive, would he listen to that call or not listen to that call? That sequence actually was heartbreaking for us to cut it. I think it ultimately might have been a conflict with Rennerâs schedule. But there was a great sequence where Hawkeye was chasing Cap through Washington D.C. there was an awesome sequence where they confronted each other in a ravine on the outskirts of D.C. and Hawkeye was shooting a series of arrows closing in on Cap, Cap closing in on him. And then Cap took him down and he realized for the first time that Hawkeye was trying to trick S.H.I.E.L.D, where he whispered something into Capâs ear that Cap had a tracker on his suit and to punch Hawkeye to make it look real, because there was a Quinjet hovering above where they were watching the feedback back at S.H.I.E.L.D. So it was a cool sequence.

I really wish it hadn’t been cut, too, but I don’t think that anything they did with the film makes this canon-incompatible, so I’m just adding it to the head canon I’ve already amassed.
