1) Why did you choose your URL?

Way back in the heyday of Angelfire, when you chose your URL, you had to choose from a set handful of two-letter combinations and then your chosen handle went on the end. ‘ia’ was one of the options, so I chose that and made my username ‘mshadow’. The 21 is because I like the number 21 and because some websites I’ve created accounts with, iamshadow has already been taken.

2) What is your middle name?

I don’t give out personal information, but I will say that it’s old-fashioned. Like my first name, which a couple of you know, it’s a name people associate more with old ladies than people in their thirties. I was given it because there were people with that name a few generations back on both sides of my family tree.

3) If you could own a fairytale/fictional pet, what would it be?

I used to want a pocket-sized dragon. Common, maybe, but no less awesome for it.

4) Favorite color?

Right now, probably purple, but I have strong loves for peacock blue, duck egg blue, jade green and cool yellow.

5) Favorite song?

I don’t really have one? I have very eclectic tastes and have handfuls of songs I like in many genres. If I had to pick one I come back to a lot, even though I don’t listen to a lot of electronic music, it’d be Massive Attack’s Teardrop. It was on one of my Triple J’s Hottest 100 albums that I bought around the time I left school, and I found it soothing to listen to on repeat while I was writing, many years before I was dignosed autistic and learned that aural stimming was a thing. I still use it sometimes when I get anxious to mellow me out and calm me.

6) What are your top three fandoms?

Right now, Marvel/Avengers is my primary, but I dabble in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, CSI, Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie’s Marple/Poirot, White Collar, Welcome To Night Vale, and Endeavour/Inspector Morse/Lewis.

7) Why do you enjoy tumblr?

I love the fan content, especially the amount of visual media and meta.

8) Tag all 9 of your tumblr crushes (they have to do all 8 questions too who can do this if they like)

No obligation for anyone to do this at all (I rarely do memes myself), but people I love dearly and follow avidly on Tumblr include: @actuallyclintbarton @jabberwockypie @kath-ballantyne @randomyayness @neurowonderful @spiralstreesandcupsoftea @the-wordbutler @literalbookworm and @copperbadge

Jewish Bucky pls

copperbadge:

Title: Day Of Atonement
Rating: PG
Summary: Bucky thinks he’s got a lot to atone for. Fortunately, there’s a holy day for that.
Notes: Thanks to arsenicjade for checking this one over for me. 😀

When Steve was little, he didn’t comprehend or even notice that good boys from his building didn’t play with the Jewish boys one block over. When he got older he understood it, but ignored it; after all, his mom didn’t care, so why should he?

Sarah Rogers didn’t give an Irish damn what the biddies in the parish thought of her or her son, as few of them had raised much of a hand to help her when Joseph was alive, and anyone she chose to associate with didn’t give a damn either. On the few occasions someone pointed out Steve’s choice in friends, she said, with an affectionate smile, “Well, Steve’s never been good at idiot rules.”

Steve ran about for most of his childhood in short pants with Bucky Barnes (Lefty Commie Jewish ma, Lefty Commie Convert dad) and Arnie Roth (orthodox, kind-hearted father, dead mother), who lived on the border between the Jewish neighborhood and the Irish one, an invisible but very tough membrane. Arnie drifted off eventually, too scared of seeming any kind of different to play with goyim, but Bucky and Steve battled angry Irish boys in Steve’s half of the street and (less often) tough Jewish boys in Bucky’s half, and soon enough most people who knew them left them alone. Sarah kept a jar of kosher pickles and a special plate for Bucky when he visited, and while she couldn’t send food over to the Barnes family, she did look after Bucky and Becca when the Barnes parents needed to go to a rally or a protest, and the time the strikebreakers put Bucky’s dad in a bad way because he was trying to Unionize.

If Steve ate a lot more matzoh growing up than most Irish, Bucky and Becca occasionally got a meal that might not strictly speaking be entirely kosher.

“Do you remember Yom Kippur back in ‘35, the year after my mom died?” Steve asked. He tried not to ask do you remember too often, but Erev Yom Kippur was in two days, and he didn’t know if Bucky would want to remember, or to participate.

“You wanted to fast with us,” Bucky said, sitting at Sam’s kitchen bar. “Mom wouldn’t let you. She had the Rabbi in to tell you the sick didn’t have to fast.”

“He boxed my ears when I lipped off to him, too.”

“He said that you were a gentile anyway, which was punishment enough.”

“Never lipped off to the Rabbi again,” Steve said ruefully, and Bucky smiled. “It’s comin’ up, you know.”

The smile dropped off his face. “I know.”

“Sam would drive you to Temple if you wanted. We could both fast with you,” Steve ventured. Bucky hadn’t left the house since they’d brought him here.

“Don’t remember much — ” Bucky’s lips twisted. “Bet I could still make kreplach, all the times we watched Mom do it, but the prayers, the words, it’s all…”

He made a faint gesture, fingers fluttering away from his head. Lost to the Winter Soldier.

“They got me,” he said bitterly. “They didn’t put me in a camp but they got me just the same.”

“Hey, no, it’ll come back,” Steve said. “It will. If you can still make kreplach you can still pray. That kinda stuff doesn’t leave you, Buck.”

“It’s Yom Kippur. I got a lot to atone for. There’s too much — “

"I don’t believe that, and I don’t think you do either, not deep down. Anyway, your dad always said the best thing about bein’ a Jew was wholesale one-day forgiveness,” Steve said. Bucky’s mom had always swatted him for that.

Bucky looked at him, head bent, only his eyes moving. “What if I can’t remember?”

“Well, then you’ll have to go back to Hebrew school,” Steve said with a grin. “I hear the Rabbis don’t box ears anymore.”

“Bet they would if you lipped off to them, you were the worst at lipping off,” Bucky replied.

"So you’ll go? Sam and I will come if you want, at least, you know — ”

“Yeah, fine,” Bucky sighed. “I don’t know, dragging you two goyim around with me, G-d better send me patience for the pair of you…”

Okay so I feel the need to make a little Hawkeye ramble.  Namely, why I love him so much, and the moment it clicked how much I truly identified with him.

Feel free to not read this, it’s really just for my own benefit.

That scene and that whole issue are my favourites, too. I’ve liked most of the stuff I’ve read so far – Blindspot was particularly useful as prequel info for Fraction’s Hawkeye, and I’ve only once actively disliked him. (It was in Secret Avengers, from back when I think Remender was writing it, and he wrote Clint as being an incompetent, grade A+ dick to everyone.)

Will look for Hawkeye and Mockingbird. Anything else you think I should add to the reading list, hint hint?

Oh man, okay, um… Look for H&M, but don’t read it until you’ve gotten some previous Clint-and-Bobbi under your belt because honestly it will break your heart more if you get to see them together before that, and I am a big fan of breaking your heart over those two, ngl.

SO!  His very first arc in Tales of Suspense (I don’t have issues i’m so sorry), where he ends up working with Natasha?  READ IT, IT IS HILARIOUS.

Early Avengers, the second team that was led by Cap and comprised of Cap, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.  (The Cap’s Delinquents team – poor Cap, having to wrangle snotty ex-criminals who are basically still teenagers and who have a surplus of sass and attitude.  And also Wanda.)

I don’t know if you’ve read the original Hawkeye solo, but that’s the one where he meets Bobbi and it is so worth it.

WEST COAST AVENGERS!  Just… West Coast Avengers.

Secret Invasion is also a must-read, ESPECIALLY if you’re at all invested emotionally in Clint and his feelings about Bobbi.  It— yeah.  I can’t really— it’s emotional.

THEN Hawkeye and Mockingbird, after Secret Invasion.  There’s another thing with the two of them between SI and H&M but I can’t remember what. -_- Some poking on google could probably provide an answer, and it’s definitely worth finding if only because I remember Clint makes a Grey’s Anatomy reference in it because he is a loser, but I don’t remember the actual title it was in. It’s been ages since I read it.

Some New Avengers stuff from post Civil War is also good, but again, it’s been ages since I read it and I can’t remember where to start you there.  (those are also good for cute Luke Cage/Jess Jones moments, if that is important to you.  They’re so precious.)

Also, Iunno if you’ve read Avengers Assemble?  But there’s an arc where Clint and Jess and Natasha go on a mission together and it’s vaguely awkward (this was before the Clint/Jess breakup) and totally adorable and totally awesome.

HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS AT ALL AND ISN’T JUST A MASH OF UNHELPFUL THINGS okay.

I have issues 1-9 of Avengers Assemble, but not the rest. I need to get it. The Hawkeye Solo thing I have is him basically playing at private detective to solve a guy’s death, and I have the run of five issues, but I haven’t read it fully yet, and I don’t know if that’s the solo thing you meant.

I have this Hawkeye torrent already on my to-download list, but it’s massive, so it’ll take me ages on our limited connection. I’ll look for West Coast Avengers and Secret Invasion and the other stuff, though.

ngl I am loving the tichel looks I’ve been able to pull off this week just with two sale rack scarves from Walmart. (Did I mention I’ve been covering my hair? No? I have been. I have no idea if it will last, and it’s not required by Reform beliefs and practices, but it feels like the right thing to do and makes me feel pretty.)

Imagine how awesome it will be one day in the far far future when I can afford to order some stuff from Wrapunzel? (Their scarves are gorgeous and I very much crave the no slip band and the shaper.) Aaaaah!

Loving the colours. I know in the past I’ve been seriously tempted to use scarves like that. Not for religious reasons, but because I have major sensory DNW issues to do with flyaway hairs tickling my face. I end up scratching myself if I’m not careful, so my hair is always pulled back or tied up.

A friend of mine converted, oh, about ten years ago? And they decided to cover their hair, and they ended up weaving a bunch of their own head scarves on their lap loom. Pretty fucking awesome.

Hello, tumblr! This is Tali’Zorah nar Adorable, and she is looking for a home!

She is probably eight to ten weeks old, is extremely friendly and totally fearless. She likes to follow humans around the house and keep them company, everywhere, all the time. She doesn’t much enjoy being held (though she tolerates it), but she will happily come and sit by you and purr when she is tired of playing. She is a little intimidated by dogs and older cats, but not terrified of them, and will probably eventually get along with any non-aggressive pets you have. Our only requirement for her adoption is that she be an indoor cat; this shouldn’t be a problem, as she shows no great desire to escape.

We can drop her off anywhere in the Tampa, FL area, and may be willing to go to Orlando or a similar distance if you can pay for gas. We’re also going to be making a road trip to Dallas in the next month or two, so if you live in northern Florida, Missisippi, Louisiana or eastern Texas, we may be able to get her there too – again, we’d probably need some help with gas but it’s doable.

If you’re nowhere near or can’t handle a new kitten right now, please signal boost! We would really like to find her a family soon.

You can contact me on tumblr or email me at taibhsearachd@gmail.com.

Also note that she comes complete with one handmade cat toy that she loves very much!

Tali, meet Scarlett. She’s your almost identical older sibling in Australia.

Akiva Goldsman’s mother, Mira Rothenberg, wrote a book that is very, very dated but which I own. It’s about her working with schizophrenic and autistic children back when no one rly knew how the fuck anything worked and it’s actually p. interesting. Both of his parents were psychology professionals, though.

actuallyclintbarton:

aaaah very cool, I did not know that!

Seconding that rec, I own that book, it’s called Children With Emerald Eyes and it’s fantastic. I wrote a long review of it on Goodreads, if you want to know more about the content. It’s hard to read at points because of the difficult subject matter, but it’s a very unusual, quality book about post-world war two child psychiatry by a very ahead-of-her-time professional. Rather than dated I’d call it historical. I own a lot of books about child psychiatry, psychology and special needs teaching/therapy (like, over 50, not even counting any of my dedicated autism books, and I’ve read many more), and I can say without hesitation that it’s in my top ten.

Morrigan likes to sleep under my desk and yells loudly when she is left alone in a room. She is definitely a Siamese mix, if there was any doubt left.

I can’t tell if my wife is turning into Tammy Pierce, Seanan McGuire, or some unholy mix of the two.

Either way, though, we got a cute cat out of the bargain.

Haha, I said Siamese mix! And yeah, the Siamese voice is pretty unmistakable.
