A recently published study by John Pachankis and Mark Hatzenbuehler has substantiated what’s called the “Best Little Girl in the World” hypothesis, first put forward in 1973 in a book by Andrew Tobias, then writing under a pseudonym. It’s the idea that young, closeted women deflect attention from their sexuality by investing in recognized markers of success: good grades, athletic achievement, elite employment and so on. Overcompensating in competitive arenas affords these women a sense of self-worth that their concealment diminishes.

…Deriving self-worth from achievement-related domains, like Ivy League admissions, is a common strategy among closeted women seeking to maintain self-esteem while hiding their stigma. The strategy is an effort to compensate for romantic isolation and countless suppressed enthusiasms. And it requires time-consuming study and practice, which conveniently provide an excuse for not dating.

Best of all, it distracts: “What love life? Look at my report card!”

…But the study does show that the longer a young woman conceals her sexual orientation, the more heavily she invests in external measures of success, potentially leading to undue stress and social isolation

Another of the study’s findings is that girls who grow up in more stigmatizing environments are more likely to seek self-worth through competition. I spent my first 18 years in a rural, religious town in North Carolina, a state that recently passed a constitutional amendment barring same-sex unions by a wide margin. Now here I am, a metal detector scanning for golden prizes. That’s no coincidence, the research suggests.

Brooklyn 99 Wedding Dress Theory

hydeandgoseek:

Gina had no intention of wearing a wedding dress to Jake and Amy’s wedding.

Gina bought Amy a backup wedding dress just in case.

Observe: the dress Gina gave Amy is 100% not Gina’s style. Gina doesn’t do lace; she’s not into a delicate or classy look; Gina goes for stylish glam in episodes where she dresses up. But Amy? Whose pre-Jake apartment was covered in doilies? Amy goes for that style.

In the Boyle Linetti Wedding episode, Gina had a gorgeous dress ready for Amy when Amy arrived filthy from catching a perp. Gina claimed it was “in case I hated your outfit.” Yet the dress looked perfect on Amy; it wasn’t something embarrassing…

So, when Amy and Jake get engaged, Gina buys a back up dress. Amy just tore up a wedding dress chasing a perp she saw while she was in a bridal store; there’s a solid chance something will go wrong on the day of the wedding, and Gina Linetti is gonna be prepared for when those dumb dumbs get filthy.

Gina Linetti wasn’t gonna wear that dress to the wedding. She just didn’t want to admit that she did something so thoughtful and nice for Amy.

Valkyrie and the Line of Odin

So in Thor: Ragnarok, on Sakaar. Thor says he and Loki are brothers and Loki replies “Adopted”.

Let’s assume that got back to Valkyrie, so she knows they’re brother but that they are not blood related. And that is all she knows.

Now let’s further assume that Hela’s “You don’t look like him” had some truth to it and that Thor physically takes after Frigga. Meanwhile, Loki and Hela have the same coloring and general build, And Loki has Odin’s fast-talking.

So what if, not knowing the particular of how Loki and Thor happened to become brothers, she’s assumes Thor is adopted one?

What if she doesn’t learn otherwise until some time into the trek to Earth?

Because  I can’t sleep anyway:

Valkyrie for what is probably the fifth time in as many days: “But are you sure he’s not the one who’s adopted?”

Thor getting seriously exasperated: “I solemnly swear on the roots of Yggdrasil that I am, to the best of my knowledge, The blood son of Odin and Frigga of Asgard.”

*a beat*

Thor: “… Of course 8 years ago I would have sworn the same thing about Loki.”

*Another beat*

Thor: “… And I would have called myself their firstborn. So I will grant that “to the best of my knowledge” may not be particularly reliable, but I’m not the one who turns blue.”

Loki, from the sideline: “That can be arranged.” *makes ominous gesture*

okay but the screenwriter for Thor: Ragnarok is obviously intimately aware of what it’s like to have siblings because like…the snake scene? Bickering at every opportunity? Throwing things at each other for no real reason? “You know this guy?” “I have no idea who this person is”? Smirking when your sibling does something cool because ‘nothing but respect for MY sibling’ and then turning around and punching each other in the face right afterward? Stabbing each other for fun and then going ‘oh come on you big baby, that didn’t even hurt’? The fucking ‘Get Help’ scene? Like bruh…that is some Truth in Hollywood right there

In honor of this post reaching 10K notes, I have more examples of Siblinghood Done Right in Ragnarok:

  • *parent leaves the area* “THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!”
  • “You’re just…the worst.”
  • *internally* bitch I am the only one that gets to kill my sibling back off!
  • That little conciliatory pat on the back Loki gives to Thor after Thor says “Jane and I dumped each other”
  • “I swear I left it right here”
  • *casually talking to each other about something mundane with the underlying threat of violence everpresent in both of your voices*
  • casual jibes and banter about the way each other dresses (“Why would I do that? I’m not a witch.” “Then why do you dress like one?”)
  • “YES! THAT’S WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE!”
    • but also the concealed worry about your sibling getting actually hurt, even though you know they’ll probably be fine
  • Loki’s extremely obvious eyerolling when those girls approach Thor in public and ask for a selfie
  • *sibling walks in while you’re trying to cause trouble and enjoy yourself* “oh shit”
