Hey, so we have six cats. If you ever wondered what they all look like, Emma actually got all six of them to sit still and look in roughly the right direction for #internationalcatday. Four of the six were rescues, living feral, when we took them in. The other two were a friend’s cats we took in when she had to move and couldn’t keep them. Ginger, O’Reilly and Scarlett are about 17. Nick is under five, we think, and Sam and Winter are brothers born approximately September/October 2016. Ginger is deaf, Scarlett is blind, and O’Reilly is and always has been chronically clumsy. Nick could do with losing a bunch of weight, Winter probably could too, but right now, they’re enjoying food security for the first time ever, so, y’know. Also, Mum keeps overfeeding them despite us trying to explain to her what portion sizes should be, and she’s the one up at 5am, so we can’t intervene when she dumps a whole can in their bowls.

I was so very angry yesterday because of a) reading a book that typified and trivialised everything that is completely wrong with irresponsible pet ownership and b) ACTUALLY DEALING WITH close family members giving a real life demonstration of such, that I essentially threw up my hands, gave up on people, ate ice cream, and started reading all the Tortall books from the very beginning with Alanna, and those were Good Choices.

Stress baking is A Thing

Spite baking is also a thing. I totally just made a box cake my sister in law left here at my mum’s house a few years ago, because the spaghetti has been floating around the kitchen in this ENORMOUS container because it was the only thing long enough, and the container with the box cake mix was the PERFECT size, and I was ANGRY about the box cake mix taking up the container. So, now I will have freshly baked out of date box cake and an appropriately sized spaghetti container.

I hope the spite cake was edible…if not at least you have the pasta storage sorted!

It was mediocre and bland but edible, as box cakes are!

(I mean, they’re great for non-bakers who want to make something, but I was helping Mum with baking since I could stand, made a swiss roll completely from scratch unsupervised at eight – no cracks in my sponge when I rolled it, either! – so, they never quite satisfy me. I can also taste all the garbage they put in to make them shelf stable, which doesn’t help.)

Bonsai apple tree growing a full-sized apple.

A perfect balance of extremely impressive and completely ridiculous.

Apple trees are DETERMINED. My parents planted a twig of an apple tree, and that first year it grew one apple. And the whole thing was bent over from the weight of it. It had one job and by God it was gonna do it.

she did such a good job I’m so proud
